Nickels replaced half dimes, used a more readily available alloy (copper-nickel), and were larger. Half dimes were worth 5 cents, but used silver. Nickels didn't come about until 1866 during the Civil War. It's easy to see how quarters and dimes go their names. Dollars and half dollars are still called that.
